A book about books always intrigues me. We have Maggie, the main protagonist, who is having challenges finding the right career path, when her best friend asks her to take over running her bookshop in the small-town of Bell River while she goes on maternity leave. Maggie jumps on the chance even though its only temporary. I found it interesting how Maggie was not much of a reader herself and that the only books sold in the bookshop were classics, with majority of the books authored by the town's famous author Edward Bell. No modern books were sold, and anyone who wished to buy these books were directed to the Barnes and Noble in the next town. What I loved was that Maggie was willing to try and find new ways to modernize the bookshop even though she had to do it secretly. And not being a reader herself, Maggie was able to find her passion of community with "book people", which I loved! All the quirky characters, especially grumpy Vernon, were my favorites! If you are looking for a light-hearted, small town dynamic, feel-good romance with found family, this is a good one to put on your radar!

“I love a book about a bookstore! This was cute and funny, but also showed that we’re never too old to figure out what we want to do with our lives — or to not know what the heck we’re doing at any age. Loved it!”

Description

"A sparkling bookish story about rules just begging to be broken." — Abby Jimenez, New York Times bestselling author of Part of Your World and The Friend Zone

I, Maggie Banks, solemnly swear to uphold the rules of Cobblestone Books. If only, I, Maggie Banks, believed in following the rules.

When Maggie Banks arrives in Bell River to run her best friend's struggling bookstore, she expects to sell bestsellers to her small-town clientele. But running a bookstore in a town with a famously bookish history isn't easy. Bell River's literary society insists on keeping the bookstore stuck in the past, and Maggie is banned from selling anything written this century. So, when a series of mishaps suddenly tip the bookstore toward ruin, Maggie will have to get creative to keep the shop afloat.

And in Maggie's world, book rules are made to be broken.

To help save the store, Maggie starts an underground book club, running a series of events celebrating the books readers actually love. But keeping the club quiet, selling forbidden books, and dodging the literary society is nearly impossible. Especially when Maggie unearths a town secret that could upend everything.

Maggie will have to decide what's more important: the books that formed a small town's history, or the stories poised to change it all.
